What would happen if someone suddenly had the power to take away our dreams? What would become of a world where its inhabitants would suddenly lose the ability to dream? For me the answer is simple. A person without dreams is someone easy to manipulate. A world without dreams, would be an easy place to master. So whatever happens, you have to fight for them. Hence the idea of finding something that reminds us from time to time that dreaming is worth it, such as the presence of a shooting star for example. This is the motif of my novel The Lake of Miracles: our dreams and our ability to fight for them, and the stars are structural symbolisms in the development of the plot.
Everyone has an inner fire that lights up when we get excited about something we want to achieve. Many times the routine, the expectations, the plans of life, are putting out the flame. Dreams are then compiled into a file in the bottom of our hearts, slowly covering in dust until the day comes when we forget about them and we are convinced that we are unable to achieve what we want. That’s when we let others tell us what it is we have to do to be happy.
In my novel however, there is an element of evil that physically appropriates this ability and takes away the dreams of each and every one of the beings of Lubathar. In real life fortunately, the ability to dream and fight for what we want depends on ourselves. Nothing and no one can take this away.
Life is composed of small and big dreams and each one is responsible for maintaining that internal fire to be able to pursue them, and not let others to dominate our desires and illusions. It is true. Some dreams come true, others don’t. As in love, there are relationships that work and others don’t, but we all learn in the process. It’s along the path and the struggle to fulfill our small and big dreams, where we can find happiness. It’s not happy who achieves a goal but who enjoys the path to reach it. When a dream is fulfilled, another is born. When it’s not fulfilled, the dream is transformed. But dreams never die, so even though when we forget them, they live in our hearts. As with human relationships, dreams also need love, dedication, and work. The key is finding that “shooting star”, that something that reminds you the reasons you have certain dreams and that you have to keep the flame alive because it’s the one that gives light to our whole existence.
The stars on the Lake of Miracles are a representation of that light that we must not let go. Personally, the cosmos is something that has always captivated me and I understand that the universe hides wonders that humans can’t fully understand. With my characters I seek in some way to express our fascination and interest in observing the stars and their symbolic connection with the act of dreaming.
I would like you to share your opinions with me. What dreams have you fulfilled? What dreams would you like to fulfill? How do you keep the inner flame? Have you find your shooting star yet?
