The Pope resigned and has already left the building. Soon another one will take his place. Maybe someday we will know the real reasons why he did it, maybe not. That ultimately does not matter. What remains are the lessons that humanity must learn to shift into a better direction. What does renouncing really mean? What I wonder is not “renouncing” in Pope terms, but the literal sense of the word.
Many may think that “to renounce” means just to give up. Until recently I also thought the same. But several things made me change my mind and the way I see its definition in real life. Because many times renouncing is the biggest symbol of courage that a human being can have when he or she is pursuing happiness. And if we really think it through, every day we are faced with it. We renounce to follow paths that doesn’t give us confidence, to people that negatively affect us, to certain lifestyle to pursue another, to the conformity in order to fight for our dreams, we renounce so many times and to many things without even realizing it. Or sometimes we are unhappy because we can’t renounce. We can’t let go. Then, why we are so shocked with the simple resignation of a man that like any other has a reason to move away from a position that he doesn’t feel comfortable any longer with?
If we stop thinking about others and their decisions and instead we concentrate on our own daily renounces, perhaps many would stop complaining about what life brings or not. Because the truth is that life is built of our personal decisions, our own renounces, they make us who we are. Renunciation leads to give into another thing, one that perhaps makes us happier. It leads us to a clear conscience, to a path much more in line with what we’ve always dreamed of. No fears.
